Chapter One: Arrival in Lisbon (or, Getting there is Half the Fun)

As I look over my photos from this past week (not an easy task as I took almost 1000 pictures...I don't want to talk about it) I realize that this is going to require a series of serious updates. I would have started sooner, but Blogger is not working and I've been doing other things and before I knew it, it was 11:00 at night. So, here is the first installment of my adventure.

Most of Monday was spent in transit. We took a bus to Shannon, a plane to Faro, Portugal, and a train to Lisbon. We got a bit lost between the airport and the train station, but shuttle bus driver kindly stopped in the middle of the road to let us off when we realized we had missed our stop. Again, I was blown away by how many people in Portugal spoke English (everyone I talked to did).

When we arrived in Lisbon just before midnight, the streets were deserted. We were glad for this because we were in complete tourist mode when we saw Lisbon. The streets are decorated for Christmas with lights galore. We saw lots of different kinds of decorations, like Christmas balls and snowflakes. It was glorious and it was exactly what we needed to see to get us pumped up again after a long day of traveling.

One of the pedestrian streets also had these arch-type displays. They made me just want to walk up and down the street music-video style singing a Christmas song. I didn't, but I wanted to.

Checking into our hostel made me even happier. Lisbon Lounge is the best hostel I've ever stayed in. The rooms were clean, well lit, and safe. We each had our own locker with our own key. It was made even better by the fact that Molly, Laura, and I got a 6-person room all to ourselves.

This is my cozy little corner of Lisbon Lounge 201. Looking at the picture makes me want to go back and sleep there, it was such a nice place to be.

That was our first day and night. There is so much more to say and I'm going away again in 5 days! Study abroad in December is more exciting than the other months and that is saying something!
