Glasgow

On Sunday morning, we woke up to catch an early morning bus to Glasgow. Our flight was leaving from Glasgow Prestwick Airport at 6:00 that evening. We planned to spend the day in Glasgow and we got lucky with a beautiful day!

My friend Laura actually knows someone who lives in Glasgow, so he became our tour guide for the day. He was very patient with us and we were lucky to have someone who knows the city. It does not feel as historical as Edinburgh and I'd say it's more trendy and hip. There is a big shopping mall there and the stores are not the same old tourist shops we saw in Edinburgh.

Despite the modern feeling of Glasgow, the buildings still look old and majestic. The architecture is much the same as those in Edinburgh and it reminds me of what I imagine London to look like, though I have never been there.

I saw this mailbox in the bus station while we were buying tickets to the airport. It does not look like any mailbox I have ever seen, even those in Ireland. It looks very old fashioned.

We finally got our bus. We had about an hour ride because Glasgow Prestwick Airport is about an hour from the city. We usually fly into and out of the inconvenient airports because they are much cheaper. I filled up the SD card that was in my camera and immediately put the next one in and continued taking pictures from the bus.

Another odd thing I saw in Scotland was the traffic light system. Just before the light turns green, the yellow light comes on in addition to the red so that there are about two seconds where two lights are lit at once. You have no idea how long I sat in the bus with my camera poised to capture this brief moment. The things I will do for the sake of this blog...

I was so happy to see the airport. After three days of constantly moving and bouncing around from place to place, I was ready to go back to Galway. We still had a ways to go though. We had to sit around the airport for another two hours before we could board. And I was disappointed because I never got a Scotland stamp on my passport, having come in by ferry and not by plane.

At long last, the hour of takeoff arrived and we went to board the plane. We didn't go in through a terminal or anything, we got to walk up the stairs into the plane! I thought only presidents and politicians did this, so I was psyched. I have rarely been so happy to ascend a flight of stairs.

After several more hours in transit (it's a two hour bus ride from Shannon airport to Galway) we made it back to Galway. I was exhausted but I still found time to look through all my pictures and purchases several times before going to bed. It was a wonderful weekend and, though I love Galway, I am looking forward to another excursion out of the country.
